Review & Update Your NPS Nomination Post Marriage / Change in Family Status
Dear Colleagues,
This is an important and time-sensitive reminder for all employees and officers who are subscribers to the National Pension System (NPS). Recent communications from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) have highlighted a critical compliance issue that requires your immediate attention.
📌Why This Matters📌
- Automatic Nullification of Nomination After Marriage
As per PFRDA (Rules & Regulations), any NPS nomination made prior to marriage automatically becomes invalid upon marriage or any subsequent change in family status.
If you have not updated your nomination after such changes, your earlier nomination loses its legal validity.
In unfortunate cases where a subscriber passes away without updating the nomination:
• The claim cannot be settled in favour of the old nominee.
• The settlement must instead go to the legal heirs, requiring a Legal Heir Certificate or Succession Certificate.
• This process is often time-consuming, involving lengthy documentation and procedural delays, adding unnecessary hardship to the family during a distressing time.
- What PFRDA / NPS Regulations Say About Payouts
Under PFRDA (Exits & Withdrawals under NPS) Regulations, 2015:
• In the event of death, the entire accumulated pension wealth is payable only to a valid nominee.
• If no valid nomination exists, the employer’s record-level nomination (if any) may be considered.
• In the absence of any valid nominee, the settlement will only be made to legal heirs, on submission of relevant legal documents such as a succession or legal heir certificate.
Hence, failure to update your nomination can cause serious complications and delays in claim settlement for your family.
⚠️ Immediate Action Required⚠️
✅ Review your NPS nomination immediately.
✅ If you are married or your family composition has changed (due to marriage, childbirth, or any other event), log in to your CRA (NSDL / KFintech) account and update your nomination online.
✅ Ensure your new nomination reflects your current family details and submit it digitally with e-sign or OTP authentication.
An outdated nomination can make your loved ones undergo a prolonged legal process for what is rightfully theirs.
Act now. Review and update your nomination today.
